Dordt Volleyball Prepares For Hastings In GPAC Quarterfinals

VolleyballGAMEDAY...Dordt College and Hastings will meet in a Great Plains Athletic Conference quarterfinal round cotntest on Saturday, November 7 starting at 7:30. The winner will advance to the semifinal round on Wednesday, November 11. The match can be heard on KDCR 88.5 FM and live on the world wide web at www.dordt.edu/athletics.

SCOUTING REPORT…Hastings College is 27-8 overall and 11-5 in the GPAC and finished in tie with Dordt College for fourth place. Hastings took the fourth seed in the tournament by virtue of their head to head win over the Defenders in early October.

Hastings averages 13.26 kills per set as a team and they put up 12.10 assists with 16.81 digs. The Broncos hit for a .236 kill efficiency. Kendra Schwein is the team leader in kills with a 3.33 average and Kelsey Wells has a 2.28 kill average and Leah Dostal is at 2.19. Haley Beardsley has been setting since Lyndi Rouzee went down with an injury and averages 9.75 kills per outing. Melynne Kessler leads the team with a 5.49 average and Tracia Norblade connects with 2.68 digs per outing. Melynne Kessler leads the team with 41 aces and Elizabeth Van Kirk has 37.

Hastings has lost to the College of the Ozarks, Wayland Baptist, Doane (twice), Morningside, Nebraska Kearney and Sioux Falls.

DEFENDER NOTES… Dordt is 25-11 overall and 11-5 in the conference with losses in the league to Morningside, Hastings, Briar Cliff and Northwestern (twice). Dordt puts down 12.62 kills per set, 11.65 sets and gets to 17.77 digs per set as a team.

Kendra Potgeter has an average of 3.57 kills per set and Jana Van Zanten is at 2.88 per outing. Danae Geels and Brittany Landegent each average 2.08 kills per set as the Defenders have a kill efficiency of .226. Jessice De Stigter and Cassie Huizenga each average 5.1 assists per set and Dorinda Hibma is leading the team in digs with 6.45 per outing. Brandee Schaap leads the team with 31 ace serves and Jessica De Stigter is at 28 aces this season. Schaap and Van Zanten each average slightly more than two digs per set.

THE SERIES…
Dordt leads the series 11-4 dating back to 1998 with Hastings winning the most recent outing, a conference match on October 9 in Hastings. Kendra Potgeter led the Defenders in kills in the loss with 12 while Jana Van Zanten had 11. Geels and Landegent each had eight kills. De Stigter put up 23 assists Volleyball and Huizenga put up 19. Hibma had 32 digs as Dordt was beaten 22-25, 24-26, 29-27, 16-25. Kelsey Wells had 13 kills for Hastings and Schwein got to 12 kills for the Broncos. Beardsley put up 52 assists in the win and Kessler had 32 digs.

LAST TIME OUT… Hastings beat Midland Lutheran 25-22, 25-16, 25-19 to maintain the fourth seed in the regular season finale. Schwein and Norblade had 11 and 10 kills each in the win and Beardsley put up 35 assists. Kessley got to 20 digs in the win.

Dordt beat Mount Marty on Wednesday night in the first round of the post-season tournament. Dordt got ten kills from Potgeter with Van’t Hul adding six. Huizenga put up 17 assists and De Stigter assisted on 11 kills. Dorinda Hibma got to 14 digs in the 25-11, 25-10, 25-21 win.

NEXT UP…. The winner will face the Northwestern-Sioux Falls winner on Wednesday, November 11 in the semifinals.
