Dordt Basketball Opens Season In North Dakota

GAMETIME...The Dordt College Defender basketball teams will be on the road this weekend to open the 2009-2010 season. The Defenders face Valley City State starting with the women’s game at 5:30 on Friday, November 6 and the women and men will face Jamestown on Saturday, November 7 starting at 2:00. The games on Friday can be heard on KDCR 88.5 FM and also live on the world wide web at www.dordt.edu/athletics. SCOUTING REPORT… The Valley City State women will be playing their season opener this weekend after posting a 17-13 record last year. Coach Jill De Vries’ team averaged 72.5 points per game last year and allowed 65.6 points while holding a slight 36.9-35.8 rebounding edge. The Vikings made 34 percent of their three-point shots last year and knocked down 43.9 percent of their field goal tries.
Valley City State returns its leading scorer from last year Abby Rittenhouse with a 14.1 points per game average and she grabbed a team high 5.9 rebounds per game last year. Amanda Brownscored 10.9 points per game last year with a 5.4 rebounding average and Caitlyn Wojahn scored 8.8 points per game last year while dishing out nearly four assists per contest. Rittenhouse was very good at getting to the free throw line where she made 109-141 shots in 29 games played. The Vikings return four of their five starters from a year ago.
The Jamestown women are 2-0 this season with a pair of wins over Brandon University. The Jimmies score 86 points per game while giving up 63 points per outing. The North Dakota based school is led in scoring by Giuli Varriano with an 18.5 points per game average and she also takes down 7.5 rebounds and has an average of three assists per game. She is making 74 percent of her shots through two games. Katie O’Neill is good for 14 points and six rebounds and team high 5.5 assists per game. Kellie Schuneman is averaging 10.5 points per game and Cori Doubeck is at 9.0 points per outing. Bridget Schuneman is averaging 7.0 points and 4.5 rebounds per game while appearing as a reserve.
Jamestown is outrebounding teams 46.5-36 and have forced 52 turnovers in two games while converting fifty percent of the field goals they have taken.
Valley City State's men are 1-1 with a loss to Lakehead University 77-68 and a 69-61 win over Midland Lutheran. The Vikings have four players averaging in double figures for scoring with Calvin Kraft leading the way with 13.5 points per game. Orlando Anderson is at 12.5 points per game and Dareon Spencer is putting points in at an 11.5 points per game clip. Tyler Macomber has appeared as a reserve in the first two games and averages 10.0 points per game.
Valley City has been outrebounded in the first two games they’ve played by a 38.5-34 average and they are making 39.5 percent of the shots they take from the field and 32.3 percent of their three point tries.
Jamestown is 1-1 as well with a loss to Lakehead by a 66-63 margin and a win over Midland Lutheran 70-39. The Jimmies are averaging 66.5 points per game while giving up 52.5 points per outing. Jamestown is making 46.5 percent of the shots they take and but have not shot free throws well to this point, making 27-52 tries for 51.9 percent.
Byron Jones is scoring 17 points per game and Hans Hoeg is putting in 13 points while grabbing 5.5 rebounds. CJ Peeters is good for 10 points per game and a team high 7.0 rebounds per outing. John Peabody scores 9.0 points per game and Hoeg is the top outside threat having made 5-7 three point tries.
THE SERIES…The Defender women trail the series with Valley City State 2-1 with one of those losses coming in overtime two years ago at Valley City. Last year the Defenders narrowly triumphed over the Vikings in a tight 54-52 decision. McKinzie Schmidt had 21 poitns and 11 rebounds with three steals and Julia DeKoekkoek chipped in with 12 points and seven rebounds.
The Dordt women trail the series with Jamestown 4-0. Last year the Defenders lost to Jamestown 68-43 with Lesley Eldridge and Amber Soodsma each getting nine points. McKinzie Schmidt was held in check offensively but did lead the team in rebounds with 12. Katie O’Neill had 23 points to lead the Jimmies and Mara Paulson had 12 points and eight rebounds.
Dordt leads the series with Valley City State 3-2 with the Defenders getting a 73-57 win last year in Sioux Center. Michael Eekhoff had 22 points and seven rebounds while Mark Rowenhorst clipped off 15 poitns and had two assists. Logan Kingma added 12 points and grabbed six rebounds iwht two blocks and two steals. Calvin Kraft and Orlando Anderson had 11 points each along with Mike Stowman. Dordt converted 51.7 percent of its shots in the game and held a 42-29 rebounding edge.
Dordt is up on the Jamestown series 3-1 with that loss happening two years ago in the Civic Center. Last year the Defenders handed Jamestown their first loss with a 66-54 decision. Dordt jumped on the visitors for a 34-18 advantage at intermission and held on to win by the 12 point margin. Mark Rowenhorst had 14 points to lead four players in double figures for the Defenders with Logan Kingma adding 13 and Michael Eekhoff and Brandon Oldenkamp each dumped in 11 with Oldenkamp grabbing 10 rebounds with two steals. Dordt managed to force 14 turnovers with just six given up but were outrebounded 39-30. John Peabody had 16 points and 15 rebounds in the loss for Jamestown with Evan Savageau scoring 15.
LAST TIME OUT… Valley City’s women are playing in their season opener this weekend.
Jamestown beat Brandon on October 24 by a score of 85-58 with Varriano scoring 19 with six rebounds. O’Neill banged home 10 points and the Jimmies made 32-63 shots from the floor.
Valley City’s win over Midland Lutheran came on October 30 with Kraft scoring 16 points and Dareon Spencer added 12 with four rebounds in the 69-61 win.
Jamestown had a relatively easy time with Midland Lutheran in a 70-39 trouncing on October 31. The Jimmies were up 36-16 at halftime and got double figure scoring from Byron Jones leading with 14. The Jimmies outrebounded Midland Lutheran 44-32 in the win and made 47.4 percent of the field goals.
DEFENDER NOTES… The Defenders will be playing season openers for both the women and men. Last year’s women’s team was 13-17 overall and 7-11 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference. The Defenders scored 64.6 points per game and allowed 65.6 points while outrebounding teams 40-9-38.7. Dordt converted 39.4 percent of their field goal tries while holding opponents to 38.1 percent.
Amber Soodsma was the leading scorer as a sophomore and returns her 15.8 points per game average while Kate Du Mez scored 13.5 points per game in 23 games. Du Mez will be unavailable for the weekend with her involvement in women’s soccer. McKinzie Schmidt averaged 9.6 points per game with a team high 8.6 rebounds per outing. Julia De Koekkoek scored 7.8 points per game in her sophomore effort and she grabbed 3.6 rebounds per game. Bre Schneidermann scored 5.4 points per game and had 6.6 rebounds per outing and blocked a team high 75 shots.
The Defender men were 15-14 last year and finished 8-10 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference. The Defenders held a slight scoring edge with a 72.6 points per game average and they allowed 71.3. Dordt was outrebounded 33.3-34.8 and made 44.6 percent of the field goals they shot.
Michael Eekhoff and Logan Kingma scored 16.8 and 16.3 points per game respectively with Kingma taking down 5.4 rebounds per game. Eekhoff led the team with 109 assists in 29 games played and he took in 4.1 rebounds per outing. Brandon Oldenkamp added 10.9 points per game with 4.4 rebounds and he made 36.1 percent of his three point shots.
NEXT UP… The Valley City women face Mount Marty in Yankton on November 13 while the Viking men are scheduled to face Viterbo on November 14. The Jamestown women travel to Dakota Wesleyaon on November 13 with the Jimmy men hosting Viterbo on the same night.
The Defenders will host Grand View on Wednesday, November 11 with the women’s game starting at 5:30 and the men at 7:30.
MILESTONES… Kate Du Mez enters the season with 956 points (11th all-time) and Amber Soodsma has 793 (19th all-time). McKinzie Schmidt has 710 points (27th all-time) and she has 641 rebounds (8th all-time). Du Mez currently ranks 2nd in assists all-time with 343. The all-time leader is Linda Mabie with 388. Du Mez also ranks 5th all-time with 190 in steals.
Logan Kingma ranks 12th in scoring with 1154 while Michael Eekhoff has 897 entering play. Kingma also has 462 career rebounds which ranks 22nd. Eekhoff is 12th all-time in assists with 239 and he’s 16th all-time in steals with 99.
RANKINGS… The GPAC again is heavily represented in the women’s poll after sending three teams to the final four at the national tournament.
