Dordt Football Gets Set For Sioux Falls Saturday

Gametime...Dordt College will travel to Sioux Falls to take on the Cougars in Great Plains Athletic Conference action on Saturday, November 7 kicking off at 1:00. The game can be heard on KDCR 88.5 FM and also on www.dordt.edu/athletics.
The Opponent… Sioux Falls is 8-0 in the GPAC and 9-0 overall and is ranked #1 in the country and is the defending national champion in the NAIA. The Cougars have outscored foes 483-67 this season—that’s an average of 53.7-7.4 per game. Sioux Falls has outgained opponents 2254-518 on the
ground and 2353-1005 in the air for a total of 4607-1523.
Ryan Lowmiller has run 111 times for 713 yards and 13 touchdowns. Quarterback Lorenzo Brown has run the ball 62 times for 538 yards and 11 scores while Jacob Crowl has 49 runs for 335 yards. Brown has also passed for 2103 yards on 143-204 attempts with one interception and 26 touchdowns. Jon Ryan is the leading pass catcher with 38 receptions for 587 yards and Alex Anderson has 27 catches for 538 yards—nearly 20 yards per catch. Four other receivers have over 200 yards in pass receptions.
Braden Wieking is the punter and has a 32.3 average after punting just 14 times this season.
Cody Cavender leads a balanced defense with 25 solo tackles and one interception while Trevor Holleman has 21 solo tackles and five interceptions. The Sioux Falls defense has accounted for 23 turnovers while the offense has given it up eight times.
Dordt College…Dordt has been outscored 307-71 this season and has 706 yards rushing and 977 yards passing. Dordt has given the ball up 24 times while taking it away from opponents 12 times.
Josh Van Kempen has 87 rushes for 322 yards with Ben Robbins taking the ball 53 times for 210 yards. Garrett Milton has completed 39-89 passes for 375 yards and Justin Knot has 59 completions in 128 attempts for 589 yards. Sam Du Mez and Kameron Gradert each have 20 catches with Du Mez at 334 yards and Gradert at 153. Van Kempen has caught 18 passes for 169 yards and Joey Vander Schaaf has 15 catches for 93 yards.
Matt Postmus is the team leader in solo tackles with 37 and has assisted on 43 stops with three forced fumbles. James Rowenhorst has made 33 solo tackles with 23 assisted and he has broken up five pass plays. Austin Bosma and Will McClain have 27 and 25 solo tackles respectively and they each have 24 assists. Jordan Huisman has assisted on 43 tackles this season and has 15 solo tackles to his credit. Brice Kroeze leads the team in sacks with 5.5. Reuben Faber has punted 52 times and has a 39 yards per punt average.
The Series… Dordt trails the series 1-0 after losing last year’s meeting on November 8 by a 34-2 margin.
The Cougars scored two touchdowns in the first quarter and led 14-0 at halftime as the Dordt defense took advantage of three interceptions and a fumble recovery to keep the Cougars close.
Sioux Falls scored once by pass on a Scott Le Brun catch on a pass from Lorenzo Brown for eight yards to cap a six play-47 yard drive with 6:54 left in the first quarter. Sioux Falls then scored on a 71 yard drive at the end of the first quarter, moving with the win, scoring on a run by Brown from seven yards out. Dordt held Sioux Falls out late in the second quarter when Phillip Sears grabbed a tipped pass at the Dordt College three yard line. The interception was the third of the game with Isaiah Busby and James Rowenhorst making the other two picks.
Sioux Falls took the opening possession of the second half for a touchdown with Brown completing a pass to Erik Cimpl for a 14 yard pass play with 12:17 left in the third. Dordt scored their only points of the day on the ensuing point after attempt when they blocked the kick and Fred Leyendekker raced the other way for a two-point conversion. Sioux Falls then put the game out of reach with a 20 yard interception return with 10:23 left in the third quarter. The Cougars got one more score on an 11 play-64 yard drive that took 5:44 off the clock and gave the Cougars the final margin of 34-2.
Dordt have the ball deep in Sioux Falls territory early in the fourth quarter after a 29 yard pass completion to Chris Minnema to the Sioux Falls 15. That drive ended in a turnover.
Sioux Falls had 173 yards on the ground and 173 yards in the air. Dordt gained three first downs and had 32 yards on the ground and 53 yards in the air. Scotty Walden had five completions for 53 yards on 16 attempts wtih two completions to Chris Minnema for 34 yards and Ryan Campbell had two catches for 18 yards. Ben Robbins had 13 carries for 18 yards and Charles Milton had 11 runs for 10 yards.
Erik Cimpl had five carries for 50 yards and Ryan Lowmiller had 10 totes for 39 yards. Lorenzo Brown completed 10-20 passes with three interceptions and two touchdowns for 118 yards. Alex Anderson and Jon Ryan each had four catches for 65 and 55 yards respectively.
Isaiah Busby had eight solo and eight assisted tackles for the Defenders while Jack Brundell had five solos and four assisted stops. Ryan Whitworth was good for four solos and four assisted while Jake Dykstra was in on seven assisted stops. Sioux Falls' defense was led by Adam Lopez with three solo tackles.
Last Time Out… Sioux Falls took a 28-7 halftime lead and rolled to a 49-14 win over Northwestern on Saturday, October 31 in Orange City. The Cougars scored on drives of 99, 30, 43 and 86 yards in the first half and piled up 462 yards of offense while surrendering 226 yards. Sioux Falls managed to score their points while running just 47 plays from scrimmage and piled up nearly ten yards per play.
Lorenzo Brown ran for 114 yards on nine carries and Ryan Lowmiller had 96 yards on 12 rushing attempts. Brown was also 11-16 in the air for 247 yards and Alex Anderson made three catches for 69 yards. Cody Cavender had four solo and four assisted tackles.
Yards were hard to come by for the Dordt College Defender football team as they lost a 30-3 Great Plains Athletic Conference match up with Briar Cliff on Saturday afternoon in Sioux Center, Iowa. The win was Briar Cliff's third of the season while the Defenders are still looking for a conference win to go with a non-conference win from earlier this season.
Dordt turned the ball over early in the first quarter and allowed Briar Cliff a short field to work with and punched the ball across on their second play of a 13 yard drive with Andrew Prohaska getting it in on a nine yard run. Briar Cliff's second drive was a 99 yard, nine play excursion that again ended with Prohaska getting in the end zone from 11 yards out.
Up 14-0 the Chargers made it a 20-0 halftime score with Luke Roder reeling in a 25 yard pass from Lehi Tonga.
The two teams traded field goals in the third period with Briar Cliff getting a 31 yarder from Josh McKean and Dordt countered with a 47 yard field goal by Reuben Faber that was set up by an Andy Mitchell interception and return.
The Chargers finished the scoring with a 60 yard drive with 9:27 left in the game as Prohaska scampered in for his third touchdown of the game.
Briar Cliff outgained the Defenders 450-29 and had the ball for 41:34 to Dordt's 18:26.
Dordt's Aaron Floen got 20 yards on five carries and Matt Postmus had five solo and eight assisted stops. Brice Kroeze had six solo stops and two assisted tackles with three quarterback sacks. Jordan Huisman and Jon Luetchens accounted for four solo stops each and Huisman had five assists.
Briar Cliff was led by Stavhn Leavy with 22 rushes for 104 yards while Damien Eichelberger and Andrew Prohaska had 86 and 82 yards each.
Next Up…Dordt will host Dakota Wesleyan in their regular season finale on Saturday, November 14 at 1:00 while Sioux Falls will cap the season against Morningside.
